Commentary on Apokatastasis

Apokatastasis means "restoration" or "return."  The reintegration of all creation to a unity, whether in the Stoic or in the Christian scheme, has been similar to the hope of other religions.

Here, two Klein surfaces (so-called "Klein bottles") unite though the creatures in each--Guinea Pig in one, Rodent Snake in the other--are inaccessible to each because of the bottles.

In our world, a first thought may be that this is good from the view of the Guinea Pig, bad for the snake.  Could there ever be reconciliation between the two in another world?

The jurors for the Joint Mathematics Meeting accepted this drawing for the art exhibition in their conference on January 4 - 7, 2012, which will be held in Boston.  This conference is hosted by the Mathematical Association of America and the American Mathematical Society.  JMM is the largest mathematics conference in the world and it includes sessions on art and mathematics as well as an exhibition of artwork based upon mathematical ideas.

Commentary on A Drive through Scottsville

Driving through a small town may be the usual, ho-hum experience for many people.  But driving through that small town may offer more to a person visually in the experience.  Not only because of what is there on all sides, but also the person as the center of that activity.

Notably, the driver is a part of the scene as well rather than isolated from it.  Instead of thinking of the perception as a looking out onto a stage, a person is tied in with the environment in which s/he travels.

This drawing won a juror's award at a Fall 2011 art show.

Commentary on Ego Trip

This was my entry for The Shoe Factory Art Co-op's show, "The Naked Self."  Artists were to portray their naked self, however that may be construed literally or metaphorically.

I was not sure the jurors would accept this drawing since I only exposed my face and feet, but they thought it was appropriate and I'm glad to have a drawing in their show (http://www.shoefactoryarts.com/).

As you can see from my submission, I took it in a metaphorical manner.  I recognize the mast may be a phallic symbol, but it's only a mast.

Consider, rather, that unlike the mastheads of past ships, the boat-man here faces inward.  Also, this is a person who creates his own wind in order to direct his sail without external help.  Additionally, the boat-man does so on a continuous loop that does not go anywhere.

That may be quite the ego trip.

Commentary on Principle of Inclusion

Does anything imply something else as well as itself?

The Principle of Inclusion may be considered the "phenomenological principle."  One should consider any event or object in its context.  A fly is not just a fly but a fly on the wall, a fly eating, a fly flying from one point to another.

The drawing here portrays just one object.  But that object splits up into two kinds of looping forms, as much as a world branches out, but is related to, its original world-point.

This drawing won an "honorable mention" at a Spring 2011 art show.  I thought it was the weakest of the three I presented.  But at least it was "mentioned."

Commentary on Ancient Seven

"Seven" in various symbols (Greek, Latin, Ugaritic) was a number of completion from the Ancient Near East literature til today.  A triad of sevens--i.e., "21"--constitutes this mathematical set of squares.
