Last Show at High Falls Gallery

The High Falls Gallery will have its last art exhibition, "Color," from May to June, 2013.  Many thanks to the director of High Falls, Sally Wood Winslow, for a great job keeping the center going for 20 years.  I am glad to have had the opportunity to show my drawings at HFG as well as in its last exhibit.

Spirit and Mind Art Show

I am participating in a show from March to May entitled "Spirit and Mind" at the Outside the Box Art gallery in Fairport, NY.  Scientific, mathematical, and technological ideas are the inspiration for the works shown.  It should be an intriguing exhibit, given the variety of approaches for such a venue.

Beyond Barriers Art Show

The Department of Psychiatry of the Office of Mental Health Promotion is sponsoring a show entitled “Beyond Barriers” at The Bridge Art Gallery at Strong Behavioral Health. The jurors selected two of my drawings for the exhibit which is scheduled for March to June, 2013.   One of my drawings, Juncture, consists of three impossible loops joining each other in an impossible way, going beyond the barriers of three-dimensional space and creating a new kind of figure.

Jurors for the Joint Mathematics Meeting accepted this drawing for the art exhibition at the conference on January 9 – 12, 2013, which will be held in San Diego, CA.  The Mathematical Association of America and the American Mathematical Society sponsor this annual meeting.  JMM is the largest math conference worldwide and includes sessions on art and math as well as a display of art based upon mathematical approaches.

Fall National 2012 Show at the Impact Artists Gallery

The Impact Artists Gallery in Buffalo, NY is exhibiting their Fall National 2012 show from October  31 - November 24.  Located at 2495 Main Street in the Tri-Main center, the gallery is one of several enterprises utilizing space at the old Trico plant.

The juror for the show, Norine Spurling, chose both of my submissions for display.  The one pictured here is The Altar Screen.  The curve of the screen is based upon the Golden ratio, the priest's robe is decorated with cross tessellations, and the far right icon alternates between foreground and background space.

Environmental Issues at Rochester Greenovation Community Gallery

From October 20 to November 17 the Rochester Greenovation Community Gallery, 1199 E. Main Street in Rochester, is exhibiting artwork with themes of political, social, and environmental issues.  On the latter, I decided to enter The Secretary's Desk into the show. 

The Secretary’s Desk concerns the problem of extinction that goes along with evolutionary development.  Although extinction may be in the natural course of biological events, it is the case that there have been needless extinctions caused by human interference.  

How much this may damage the Earth’s ecosystems is difficult to say, but it is likely not worth the risk to continue in ignorance.  Noted within the drawing are extinct plant and animal species, a skull of Homo Sapiens warns of this possible future for ourselves.

21st Regional Artists Exhibition at the Art Dialogue Gallery, Buffalo, NY

The Western New York Artists Group (http://www.wnyag.com/) sponsors a regional, juried exhibition of art each year.  The juror, Anthony Bannon, approved one of my two submissions for the show, the drawing Still Life.  I did not have a photograph of it (artists had to bring their work to the gallery for the jurying process) so I took one of it at the exhibition.  The staff hung it right near their front window and it was difficult to get a straight-on shot.  You can see a better photograph of it by clicking on Gallery I.  The show, on display at the Art Dialogue Gallery, One Linwood Avenue, Buffalo, NY, opened August 24 and will close September 28. 

The Schrodingers' Cats

The Schrodingers' Cats is one of my four drawings in the online exhibition of the Next Big Idea SMART show (Science, Math, Art), http://www.nextbigideala.com/smart2012contestpage.

The SMART virtual show is a part of the September event held in Los Alamos, NM.  The virtual show, as its site comments, "...is an international competition, with its first successful round culminating at the 2011 Next Big Idea Festival."  The jurors require artists to present a scientific or mathematical principle in an artistic medium of choice.  

Here, Professor Schrodinger opens the box to check on the status of the cat, and their quantum world splits into two!  (No animals were harmed in the production of this drawing.)

Nightly News Report

A print of Nightly News Report will be on display at The Shoe Factory's "Fly Me to the Moon" exhibit this Summer.  The original medium is pencil on paper.  This print was made on bamboo paper, which helps to show the various grades of shading.

Commentary on Juncture

The drawing presents three impossible figures joined, appropriately enough, in an impossible way.  A cousin to the figure of the Necker cube though a bit more sophisticated, it shows the ambiguity of each oval hoop's form as well as the relation of each to the others.

A Square for Penrose to be on display at the Bridges Math Art 2012 Conference

In July 2012, the Bridges Math Art Conference will take place in the Baltimore, MD region at Towson University.  A Square for Penrose, along with two other drawings of mine, will be on display during the conference.  From the website description, "The Bridges Conference, the largest mathematics and art interdisciplinary conference in the world, has traveled to cities in North America and Europe, and attracted participants from over thirty countries."
